Two Poems published in The Galway Review

Thanks to The Galway Review for publishing two of my poems. They are more song lyrics than poems, so I’m not sure how well they work on paper (or the screen to be more exact). Other versions of the poems have appeared on this blog, but I think they may have finally settled down, although….

Check them out here.

        Hi Lisa
Just checked out The Galway Review site and can’t find your comment there. Would love to read it, so you could always post it here if you get a chance. Always glad to get your input, much appreciated, JIM

That’s the pits. Maybe they just haven’t approved it yet? I’ll try to remember what I said.

You do an excellent job of world building in each one. Your description of the tourists is spot on. Our local “leaders” are trying to turn our berg into a tourist destination and a year or so designated boundaries downtown where you can walk around with drinks. Too bad so many of those plastic cups have to be used because a bottle might fall (or vendors lose their 10c deposit.) It is funny how little desperate people need to keep hope alive (I see the waitress as that little.)

On the second one I wonder if you’ve seen the HULU series, “Dopesick”? I just started watching it, where it shows how methodical the oxy makers were in developing, marketing, addicting, and hiding facts until “hillbilly heroin” couldn’t be ignored anymore.

Congratulations on getting them published. Would love to hear them set to music.

Congratulations on your poems in the Galway Review. There is a bitterness to them that captures the way so many people pass their days with a desperate sadness underlying every action.

Love, love the lyrics / poetry! I would enjoy singing your lyrics! Feeling sad this morning knowing Jimmy Buffett is no longer with us … he would have enjoyed your post!

Wonderful poems, Jim, and kudos on their publication. In the first poem I love the lines advising, if one is going to take a fall, to try to do it with grace. In the second, I love the birds, and the powerful message about OxyContin: sometimes the thing that brings you comfort is the thing that does you in. Well done.
