Moon Rant

Moon Rant

Here I am
a cheddar searchlight in the sky
waiting for the arrival of man
with his small steps and giant leaps,
his garbage can machines,
his religion, his culture, his competing ideologies,
his self-aggrandizements, his bragging rights, his racism,
his greed, his pomposity, his self-importance,
his astronauts named “Buzz”.

I tell you, colonization never works out for the colonized.
I have no desire to be turned into a destination for space tourists
or a land fill or, more accurately, a moon fill.

What’s in it for me?
Where’s the re-mooneration?

They say that nature abhors a vacuum
well, I can handle a vacuum
it’s vacuity, I abhor.

This is a rework of a previous post prompted by a challengea while back from Sarah over at dVerse to write a piece of prosery, of flash fiction (limit 144 words) incorporating the phrase “I dreamt I was the moon” from a poem by Alice Oswald.

Taking part in Open Link over at dverse.

Love this post! So well done…..These lines

    “What’s in it for me?
    Where’s the re-mooneration?”

Yep….that moon would be wise to close up for any future landings, that’s for sure. Humans don’t have a good record right now, in terms of protecting the earth we have. Or in providing for the myriads of people we have across the globe.

I enjoyed your moon rant, Jim, especially the ‘cheddar searchlight in the sky’. Let’s hope they stop sending all that garbage and astronauts named Buzz up to moon, and leave her to silver the sky peacefully.

Very creative writing, Jim. I love what you have done with this chunk of Cheddar! You are right about all the future conflicts that will arise if we attempt to colonize the moon. We tend to mess up more than we help it seems.

    Fantastic perspective!

“I tell you, colonization never works out for the colonized.
I have no desire to be turned into a destination for space tourists
or a land fill or, more accurately, a moon fill.”

Truth wrapped up in delightful words.

This is so clever and humorous, Jim. I love how you capture the moon’s perspective on humanity’s grand plans and ambitions! You’ve woven satire with insight perfectly.
